How we speak to others and how we speak to ourselves can have immense power. In essence, our thoughts, the words we speak and how we absorb the words of others controls the reality we live in. One of the things I spend a lot of time doing as a teacher is preparing yoga classes with themes that will speak to my students both on and off the mat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen students moved to tears (me included) by the theme and wording interlaced throughout a yoga class. As we have already seen, a yoga class isn’t just about linking postures together; it’s about finding connection within, learning more about yourself and finding kindness and compassion towards yourself and others – the goal being to help you to lead a calm, happy and more holistic life. The words spoken during a practice both out loud and internally matter.

In this chapter I will help you understand the power in words – not just in the words we say to others, but in our internal dialogue too. I will outline techniques to help you develop more mindfulness around words and I will lead you through the setting of intentions and affirmations so that you can learn how to take charge of your thoughts and change your thinking patterns to help transform your life.
